How To Design Yourself

“You see things not as they are but as you are.” – Anthony de Mello

Yesterday, we unveiled the big secret to Self Design:

Who we think we are is not who we really are.

Who we really are is consciousness itself:

The innermost point of view, the original spark of intelligence that experiences life from within, like an actor experiences a role through his character.

But this drama we call life is so immersive that most of us have forgotten we’re the actor, not the character we’re playing.

More importantly, we’ve forgotten that our character; who we think we are…

…Our personality, preferences, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, behaviours, and everything else we normally see as “ourselves”…

…Can be re-written.

We can choose the character we want to play, tweak and optimize and upgrade and yes — design ourselves based on the experience of life we want to have.

This is the starting point for any honest journey of inner development:

In shaking off the rigid constraints of who the world told us we should be, deciding for ourselves who we really want to be, and then becoming who we want to be by matching our behaviours to our highest vision of ourselves.

I’ll say that one more time, because this is the essence of the Self Design process:

1. Understanding yourself as you currently are

2. Designing yourself as you want to be

3. Transforming yourself by matching your current behaviours to your ultimate vision of who you’re becoming.

It’s beautifully simple in theory, but infinitely nuanced in practice, and there is a lot more to say before we’re through.

For today, I want to turn your mind toward the question that all of this work rests upon:

Who do you really want to be?

Feel free to reply with your initial thoughts, and we’ll go deeper tomorrow.

P.S. Here’s the plan:

Over the next few days, we’ll continue learning the foundations of Self Design.

On Monday (December 11th), I’ll open registration for our new course, The Art of Self Design.

Registration will close on Thursday (December 14th) at midnight, and the course will begin on Friday.

(and we’ll continue our daily email lessons the whole way)

I still haven’t decided whether I’m going to:

1. Pre-record a polished, fancy course (similar to DeepGame)

2. Or, teach the course live with Q & A’s and group discussions (and recordings for those who don’t attend live)

3. Or, do mixture of both.

I’m leaning towards #2 or #3 (there’s an energy to live teaching that seems to bring out my best work), but I’d love to hear which option resonates with you.

Let me know 🙂

In the meantime, here’s where you can catch up on the rest of our Self Design series:

Part 1: The first step in human development

Part 2: Who are you?
