“Work as hard as you can at one thing for a year and see what happens.” – Jordan Peterson
Here’s the direct, straight-line path to confidence in 2024:
Stop trying to build confidence and get to work building competence (ie. ability) instead.
As we said on our Self Design call last Saturday:
Asking for confidence without competence is asking for delusion.
If you want to feel confident in your ability, without actually having ability, you’re asking to be delusional about your ability.
If you want to feel confident in your work ethic, without actually having to work hard, same deal.
And, if you want to feel confident in your character — perhaps the most important type of confidence there is…
…Without actually having to do the inconvenient work of:
– Keeping your word
– Telling the truth
– Being reliable
– Doing what you say you’re going to do when you’re going to do it
– etc.
…Yep, delusion again.
So the direct path to confidence is to forget about building confidence:
Don’t talk about it, don’t think about it, don’t stand in front of the mirror and say pretty things to yourself about it.
Just wake up every day, put your boots on the ground, and get to work proving you really are about it.
Is there any other way?
