“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs, and developing our wings on the way down.” – Kurt Vonnegut
Welcome welcome.
This email officially kicks off our 9th Law / Beyond Basketball / Self-Mastery / Name-In-Progress lessons.
(which reminds me, we should probably come up with a name soon)
I tried writing to you yesterday, and found myself wrestling the worst case of writer’s block I’ve had in years…
…Probably because I haven’t written emails like this in, well, years (more on that in a sec).
So today, I’m going to keep it loose and casual, and share a little bit of my thought process for the upcoming lessons.
I think it’ll be fun (and valuable) for both of us, and just in case I end up boring you — deeply sorry — I’ll drop you a little bonus gift at the end that should make it all worth your while.
Deal?
Deal 🙂
Okay, so:
In case it isn’t obvious, I’m figuring this thing out on the fly.
I’ve come to a point in my process, both as a practitioner and as a teacher of the internal path, where basketball is simply too limiting — and these emails are my first experiment in teaching a broader and more advanced set of skills.
(besides, of course, last year’s retreat)
Honestly, I’m not sure where this experiment is going yet:
I will probably create a podcast, and/or a course, and/or a membership, and/or an AI-powered augmented reality device that induces mystical experiences with the press of a button (who knows!)…
…But for now, my plan is to simply get back to the one habit I credit for most of the success I’ve had in my life:
One practice, done for at least 60-90 minutes every single day (5 days per week is fine), that develops the core craft that will drive your career and your life path forwards.
For many years, that core craft was writing a daily email (like this one) seven days per week, to our Elite Guard Training audience.
With daily practice, I got very good at it, and that one email newsletter generated (many) millions of dollars for EGT, while at the same time sharpening my ability to write and communicate.
Then, for a few years, my daily creative practice became speaking on camera for DeepGame — which also drove the business and my skill set forwards.
But recently, I’ve felt a bit lost, unsure of what my daily creative practice will look like during this next evolution of my work.
So this is me, jumping off the cliff and growing wings on the way down.
We’ll start with mostly-daily emails, and see where they go.
Maybe in a month (or a week) I’ll decide I don’t want to write every day, and would rather record on-camera talks instead.
Maybe I’ll strike a balance of both.
Or maybe it’ll be something totally different, like Tweeting or breakdancing on TikTok.
Okay probably not.
But who knows.
We’ll find the way forwards by moving forwards, and finding the way as we go.
Which brings us to lesson #2, for today:
Action creates clarity.
As we said in our 9th Law session, our only goal is to find the “next first track” — not to magically see the entire path laid out for us.
So consider today’s email the next first track in a life-long series of next first tracks along the infinite path of internal development.
It feels good to walk that path with you.
And I can’t wait to hear all about your own discoveries along the way.
For now, let’s do a quick recap of today’s topsy-turvy lesson:
1. I have no idea what I’m doing.
2. That’s okay, because the act of doing it will create clarity.
3. “Doing it” means a daily creative practice…
…Whether it’s writing, speaking, leading a team, building a business, studying the stock market, sharpening your jumper, or whatever craft you feel called to.
If you need help finding your craft, I think our 9th Law session will help enormously.
If you already have a craft — or, have a few ideas of what your craft might be — shoot me a reply and let me know.
I read these replies personally, and would love to hear what you’re working on.
Either way, I’ll see you back here tomorrow for round 2 🙂

P.S. Didn’t think I’d forget, did you?
Here’s an extra little bonus gift for making it all the way to the end of todays’ experimental first lesson.

Muchas gracias to you, and enjoy.
