The 50,000 Hour Theory

“The fast way is the slow way because the slow way is the only way” – Steven Bartlett

When my first QiGong teacher, Bruce Frantzis, was asked what he thought of the 10,000 hour theory…

(ie. the Gladwellian idea that mastery is reached through ten thousand hours of practice)

…He laughed:

“Try 50,000.”

And, while I’m not sure his math is accurate, his point is clear:

The highest human achievements…

* Mastering of your craft

* Building an enduring, high-value business

* Cultivating a deep, healthy relationship that lasts

* Building a world-class body

* Developing genuine wisdom & understanding

* Enlightenment

…Can only be accomplished through consistent focus over extremely long periods of time.

If you just wanna hack together a side-hustle, pick up a chick, read a self-help book or three, and log yourself a Headspace streak, a busy weekend can probably get it done.

But if you want to do something life-defining:

Stop thinking in weeks and months, and start thinking in years and decades.

There is no other way.
