Practical Principles of Life Strategy (age 18-35)

“Live your life as you see fit. That’s not selfish. Selfish is to demand that others live their lives as you see fit.” – Anthony de Mello

I don’t know why they don’t teach this in school.

Winning a war or a fight or a seven game series requires a clearly defined, well-thought, properly-executed strategy…

…And yet, when it comes to the game of life — life — most of us are just kinda winging it.

Does that make sense to you?

Me ‘neither.

So let’s lay down some practical principles of life strategy, targeted to your all-important years:

That critical ~18-35 phase where the foundations of your life will be laid down and your course will be charted.

Right now you’ve still got the juice, the freedom, and the stones to really make something happen, so let’s make it happen.

Starting with…

Step 1: Figure out what the hell you want.

What really, honestly, actually matters to you?

Don’t be so sure you know the answer:

At 20, I thought I had it all figured out — looking back, I didn’t know my ass from my elbow.

This is the question that determines your destiny, so contemplate it deeply.

And then, keep contemplating it, for the rest of your life.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more.

P.S. Two things:

1. A perfect follow-up to the note in yesterday’s PS:

“I have led a toothless life.

A toothless life.

I have never bitten into anything.

I was waiting.

I was reserving myself for later on—and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone.”

– Jean-Paul Sartre
