“Nobody cares. Work harder.” – Cameron Hanes
Maybe I’m being insensitive.
Maybe I need to do some compassion practice to tune my heart chakra and expand into the infinite bliss of love and light or whatever.
Or maybe I’m just getting old and cranky.
But lately, my tolerance for whining…
– Athletes whining about coaches and teammates
– Entrepreneurs whining about stress and lack of time
– People whining about the government / society / world / other people
…Has rapidly approached zero.
Of course, just writing those words is hypocritical:
I’ve done all of those things myself, and will probably slip up again in the future.
So this message goes for me as much as anybody.
But the fact remains:
Power follows responsibility.
Whoever and whatever we make responsible for our situation now has power over our situation.
Blaming the world for our unhappiness leaves us powerless to become happy, because we don’t control the world.
Blaming others for our lack of success leaves us powerless to become successful, because we don’t control others.
Blaming our lack of time for our lack of progress leaves us powerless to make progress, because we don’t control time.
In other words:
Whatever we point the finger at, we give power to.
And here’s a secret:
Whatever we point the finger at, doesn’t give a sh*# anyway.
The ocean doesn’t care when we whine about the waves, it’s still gonna drown us if we don’t shut up and swim.
So take 100% responsibility — even if it’s not 100% your fault — and then get busy changing what is possible to change.
As long as you’ve done that, you’ve done all you can:
Let the chips fall where they may, and accept the outcome with grace.
You might just end up with the outcome you wanted all along, even if it’s not the one you planned for — because it’s not about where you’re going:
It’s about who you’re becoming in the process of getting there.
