It Takes 10 Years

“The fast way is the slow way because the slow way is the only way” – Steven Bartlett

We’re back 🙂

A quick update on what’s gone down since our last email:

Last week, DeepGame retired.

Yesterday, I gave myself a rare long weekend.

And today, we embark on the first official day of doing this work — uncovering, unlocking, and unleashing human potential — full time.

It feels… Right:

Like breaking fresh ground on new building site where a skyscraper will one day stand.

But today, there is only lumber, steel, and a vision in the mind of the architect who knows that with ten years of consistent labor, it will touch the sky.

Ten years.

It’s an almost magical number:

The number of years of consistent, obsessive, grinding work it takes just about anyone to reach the early stages of mastery in just about anything.

There are exceptions, of course, and success can definitely happen sooner (or later).

But mastery — the early stages, anyway — seems to happen somewhere around year ten, and it’s a magical thing when it does.

I felt it for the first time in basketball, when around year ten I all but stopped missing jump shots in training.

I felt it for the second time in entrepreneurship, when around year ten DeepGame was born.

And I fully expect to feel it for the third time ten years from today:

When these teachings touch the supreme flow state known as mastery, and stand as a guiding light towards ultimate human potential.

That’s the goal, anyway…

And I don’t know of a more reliable path to the goal than spending ten years consistently, obsessively, relentlessly grinding towards it.

You won’t be guaranteed a fairytale ending, of course.

But you’ll have a damn good shot at one.

And with that:

A new decade begins…

P.S. Two things:

#1:

A huge welcome to everyone who joined this newsletter after DeepGame closed last week.

New issues drop (almost) every morning, so stay tuned.

And, in the meantime, you might want to check out our greatest hits.

(one of our entrepreneur subscribers recently told me this one is his favorite)

#2:

Rogan’s podcast didn’t make money until year five; by year ten he was starting to entertain $100 million offers from Spotify.

Just sayin 🙂
