How to meet big, scary challenges

“Every day, bite off a little more than you can chew, and chew it.” – Michael Singer

One of my closest friends gave birth to her first child over the weekend.

About a week before she went into labour, she sent me this text:

“I’m not ready. I have no idea what I’m doing.”

And while I definitely feel for her — holy sh*t that’s scary…

(again, not a parent here so forgive me for talking out of my ass but this is my newsletter so too late, can’t stop me)

…Her words reminded me of a quote I once heard:

“Nobody is ready for parenthood, we just do it anyway.”

When I think back on what I’m most proud of doing in my life…

– Dropping out of college to launch a multi-million dollar company with zero business background and no idea what I was doing

– Leaving my family, house, and friends back home and travelling almost non-stop through my 20’s

– Entering into a traditional plant medicine apprenticeship and living in strict isolation for 18 months

…I felt “ready” for exactly none of them, but did them all anyway.

I imagine parenthood will feel the same way.

After all, how can we feel ready to do something bigger than we’ve ever done before, if we’ve never done anything so big?

We make the leap, and watch ourselves expand to meet the challenge.

Congrats, MK.

You got this.

P.S. Whenever I get all rah-rah-you-can-do-it like this, I feel the need to add the disclaimer:

1. I really mean it.

2. Except for certain cases, when I really don’t.

If you want to squat 500 lbs but you’ve never lifted weights, making the leap is only gonna land you in the hospital.

If you wanna have a kid but you’re 18 years old and still get your updates on world affairs through TikTok, put a strap on it.

And, if you bite off way more than you can chew… You’re probably gonna choke.

Disclaimer over.
